Symptoms Of Poor Water Quality

Did you know the quality of your home's water can cause a variety of issues throughout your home? Hard water, improper pH balance and other contaminates can cause issues that range from spots on your glassware to damaging the water pipes in your home. If you are noticing any of the following symptoms in your home, call Lake of the Ozarks' water experts at 573-719-1314.

Dry Skin / Hair
Hard water will not only affect your home, but you may also notice it affecting your body. It can clog your pore, which can leave your skin feeling dry and itchy. In addition, your hair can become damaged and unmanageable due to hard water.

Stiff Laundry / Laundry Stains
Calcium and magnesium lingering in your water can cause your laundry to become stiff or hard. In addition, poor water quality can also leave your freshly laundered clothes with stains. Iron is just one of the possible reasons for your water damaging your clothes.

Soap Scum / Lime Buildup
Soap scum and lime build-up are the residues that you see left behind on faucets, in your tub, and in your sinks. It’s caused by hard water and can be damaging to your pipes and fixtures.

Spots on Glass / Cloudy Glassware
Hard water will leave your glasses spotted and dirty looking even when they come straight out of the dishwasher. In addition, you will also find these spots on your shower door and faucets.

Poor / Bad Taste
Does your tap water taste bad? If so, there could be contaminants such as chlorine or sulfur in your water. Water that tastes salty could be caused by sulfate concentration levels and geographic tendencies. Bitter tasting water is often caused when the pH of your water is out-of-sync.

Chlorine / Musty Smell
Chlorine is one of the most commonly used water disinfectants use by water companies. However, it can leave an unpleasant taste in your water when it reaches your home. Water can also smell musty or sometimes fishy, this can be caused by iron and copper in your home's water.

Rusty or Blue / Green Stains
Iron is one of the most common types of problem water and can leave your fixtures and tubs with rust stains. Blue and green stains in your tubs and sinks are often caused by low pH levels in your water.

4 Signs You May Have A Problem With Your Water Quality

Safe, clean drinking water at the Lake of the Ozarks is something a lot of us are fortunate enough to be able to take for granted. We may not even give our water supply a second thought - that is, not until something happens that makes us question the cleanliness or safety of our water.

Contaminated water can cause a number of problems in the home, affecting everything from your appliances to your family's health. As a result, it is important that you always remain vigilant and head of any potential problems before they have a chance to develop into something truly serious. Our water specialists at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to help with these common warning signs to watch out for.

4 Signs You May Have A Problem With Your Water Quality

1. Hard Water Spots
Hard water can leave behind mineral deposits (usually lime and calcium) that may build up and cause problems within your appliances and pipes. Over time, hard water can also negatively impact other aspects of your home life, such as your water bill and cleaning efforts. If you notice decreased flow in your pipes or spots on your drinking glasses after they come out of the dishwasher, you may have a hard water problem.

2. Rust Stains
Second to hard water, high iron content is one of the most common problems with water quality at the Lake of the Ozarks. In high concentrations, excessive iron can cause numerous problems, including clogged pipes, strange-tasting food and beverages, and stains on sinks, tubs, and laundry. If you notice reddish or brownish stains where water has been or a metallic taste in your water, you may have a high concentration of iron.

3. Chlorine Smell
In an effort to clear the water of any contaminants (such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses), most city water treatment facilities apply a small amount of chlorine to the water to decontaminate it. Ideally, this amount of chlorine should be small enough that it is not distinguishable by taste. However, some treatment facilities get a little over-zealous with the chlorine dosages, resulting in poor-tasting drinking water. Having a good home water filtration system can help overcome this.

4. Rotten Egg Smell
Have you noticed your water smelling or tasting like rotten eggs? This can be caused from a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide gas or sulfate minerals. Sometimes it is noticeable when the water is first turned on, sometimes only when hot water is used, and sometimes it is constantly present. Though unpleasant to smell and taste, the sulfide-oxidizing bacteria commonly found with sulfate minerals are not known to cause health risks to adults. (They can cause a laxative effect that can be problematic in newborns). However, hydrogen sulfide gas is a toxic substance that can lead to severe nausea, illness, and (in extreme cases) even death.
