Can Drinking Water Really Make You Feel Fuller?

You are in the first week of your new diet and you are starving! Really think about it though, are you actually hungry or could you possibly just be dehydrated? The human body is made up of approximately 60 percent water. Your body can require approximately between 2 to 3 liters of water or other beverages to replenish itself. Water is a key component in good everyday health. It also has other advantages too, such as helping you feel FULL FASTER and LONGER. In today's blog, Culligan of the Lake of the Ozarks is going to share information on how water can make you feel full, water based foods and warning on not to drink too much water because it is possible.

Water Can Make You Feel Full

According to the SFGate website, Dr. Melina Jampolis, Physician Nutrition Speicalist, cited on CNN Health, revealed that people who drink two glasses of water 20 to 30 minutes before meals lose significantly more weight than people who do not. At times it can very difficult for the body to tell the difference between hunger and thirst. Due to this, water can often be used to curb your hunger or cravings. Staying hydrated consistently is important o avoid eating more food than your body actually needs.

Water-Based Foods

Eating water based foods can also trick your body into thinking it's full.  Eating water-based foods have a similar effect to drinking water. Water based foods include foods such as:

  • Soup (Broth-Based)
  • Lettuce
  • Low-fat dairy
  • Oranges
  • Watermelon
  • Spinach
  • Garlic
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries

Eating these types of food can have comparable effects to drinking a glass of water. Consider eating a piece of fruit or vegetables before a meal to feel full faster and cut back on eating too many calories.

Warning: Don't Drink Too Much Water

Believe it or not, it is possible to drink too much water. This can be very dangerous and lead to hypotermia, which can lead to confusion, seizures and possibly a coma. Drinking multiple gallons of water at a time can lead to this. This rare condition is more commonly found in athletes and the elderly. Only use water as a supplementary tool and not a replacement for food when you are dieting. You may consider consulting a doctor before beginning an extreme diet.

It’s National Water Quality Month

It’s National Water Quality Month! The nature of your water is essential. In honor of National Water Quality Month, Culligan at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to give you 7 things you can do to help keep your water sources clean.

1. Recycle Your Used Items

Recycling your items and disposing of items that can not be recycled the right way can drastically help the environment and keep your water clean. Recycling keeps your items from reaching river other water sources. Even just throwing a cigarette in the trash vs. the ground can help a lot.

2. Minimize Your Chemical Use

Eliminating or minimizing as much as possible your use of harsh chemicals as much as possible is a great way to protect the global waters from chemicals. For example, fertilizers normally consist of phosphorous and nitrogen. If these chemicals reach the water, they can lead to a surge in algae growth, which can then lead t the killing of existing aquatic life.

3. Reduce Your Water Use When Possible

Lower your water usage to as much as possible. Lowering it keeps water supplies cleaner by reducing chemicals used in treatment.

4. Dispose of Your Hazardous Materials Correctly

Proper Disposal of your chemicals, such as motor oil, paints or pharmaceuticals keeps them from entering your water source. Check with your local municipal center on where you can drop off materials such as these in your area.

5. Keep Runoff Minimal

When water runs down a street it picks up toxins off the street and can eventually reach your waterways. To minimize this, you can sweep rather than hose down your driveway. When washing your car, try using a bucket rather than a hose. Even your choice in landscaping can help with the runoff. Having gravel over garden will help with the runoff.

6. Advocate for Clean Water

Once you have learned how to keep your water clean, spread the word! Use your new found knowledge to teach others how to keep their water clean, possible through a community education program. Speak at chamber meetings or town meetings. Bring it up at the local PTA meeting. This affects everyone, so spreading the word can be essential because this is an issue that involves everyone.

7. Participate in Clean Up Efforts

Participate in town clean up to help remove the trash from the water. Better yet, you can even organize a church group or school clean up to help maximize your efforts.
