5 Tips for Avoiding Candy Binges this Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone! We want everyone to have a HAPPY, but SAFE Halloween this year. Part of having a Happy Halloween is not going on a bender and losing control with your candy binging. Our quality water company at the Lake of the Ozarks would like to give you a 5 tips you can follow in order to avoid Halloween Candy Binges.

5 Tips for Avoiding Candy Binges this Halloween

1. Stay HYDRATED!

Did you know that drinking water can make you feel more full? This Halloween weekend, drink plenty of water. A general rule of thumb you can follow is either to drink half your bodyweight  in ounces or to try and stick to drinking 8 ounces of water per day. If you have a sweet tooth, however, try drinking hot tea. Hot tea can be a good option when you care craving something sweet.

2. Keep working out.

Here is a good way you can think about it. The more you exercise continuously, the more your body will crave healthier foods and water. Also, if you burn lots of calories, you can feel less guilty about eating a piece of candy because it won't be as bad as if you weren't working out.

3. Keep eating healthy.

Halloween brings the temptation, sweets are everywhere! However, you can still remain healthy. If you are trying to diet, just continue to eat a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner and have health snacks at the ready. Your co-workers may bring in Halloween treats, so just try to keep some healthy snacks in your desk drawer.

4. Chew gum.

Did you know that chewing sugar free gum can be a low-calorie way of dealing with your sweet cravings? BONUS TIP: Studies also show that chewing gum can lower stress.

5. Try savoring 1 piece of candy per day.

If you are MUST have your candy and after following these tips, you still can't resist your cravings, that's ok. Just exercise the practice of portion control Try limiting yourself to one piece of candy per day, but when you eat it, eat it slowly. Savor it! Eating slowly can actually trick your body into feeling fuller faster.

What Type Of Water Should Be Used When Preparing Baby Formula?

Congratulations! You've just had a new baby and you have decided to feed your new bundle of joy baby formula. It's important to know that the chemicals and minerals that are often found in usual drinking water may not be right for your baby at such a young age. Culligan at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to give you a few guidelines to follow when trying to ensure your baby stays healthy while drinking formula.

Guidelines to Follow When Trying to Ensure Your Baby Stays Healthy While Drinking Formula

Decide on the Right Water to Use with Baby Formula

Before you decide on what type of water to mix into  your baby's formula, consult with your doctor. Also, if you are on a public water system, you may be able to with your local water utility company to see how much fluoride is in the water.

Water You Can Use

Bottled water (just for babies)

There is water  out there that is specifically designed to use with baby formula. Of Course, this type of water follows much stricter guidelines.

Tap water

Depending on what are you live in, tap water can be perfectly safe to use. Again, consult with your doctor first before deciding on the water to use with your baby's formula.

Bottled water

If you do choose to use bottled water, be sure you make sure there are no additives. Bottled water may not be sterile, so you may have to boil it, just like you'd boil tap water.

How to Add Water to Your Baby's Formula

When you add water to your baby's formula, be sure to follow the directions that are on the package of the formula. The basic rule of thumb for liquid-concentrate or powdered formulas can just be to:

1. Start with the cold tap water. Let the water run for about 2 minutes to get cold. (The colder the water is, the lower the amount of contaminants you may have in the water.)

2. Pour the cold water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Let it boil for about a minute, then let the water cool down.

3. Once the water is cooled, you may use it to make the formula.

4. Mix the formula as directed on the package.

3 Key Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home

There are areas that suffer from drought from time to time, so conserving water is very important. Even if you don't live an area that suffers from drought, using your water wisely can help with your utility bill. In this blog, Culligan at the Lake of the Ozarks would like to give you 3 key ways to utilize your water conservatively.

3 Key Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home

1. Turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth.

Turn off your water while you are brushing your teeth. Doing this can help you save water. Did you know that the average faucet releases 2 gallons of water per minute? You can save up to 8 gallons of water every day just by turning off your tap while you brush your teeth, at least if you brush you brush your teeth for the recommended 2 minutes. This rule can also go for gentlemen who shave at the sink. Rinse your razor in a pool of water in a plugged sink instead of rinsing it under running water every time.

2. Load your dishwasher correctly.

Loading your dishwasher incorrectly can lead to still-dirty dishes and your dishwasher having to use extra water to wash your dishes. There are wrong ways and right ways to load your dishwasher. For example, some common mistakes when loading your dishwasher can include:

  • placing car-covered dishes everywhere
  • putting protein-crusted dishes anywhere
  • placing your spoons where the tops touch eachother
  • overloading your dishwasher
  • not following directions

3. Fix your leaky sinks and running toilets.

Did you know that a running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water each day? Also, at one drip per second, a leaky faucet can leak 3,000 gallons in a year. If your toilet is running or your sink is leaking, we recommend you call a plumber as soon as possible. Getting your toilet and sink fixed as soon as possible can not only help prevent a more expensive utility bill, but also it can help prevent even more costly repairs from happening.
