1. Chlorine
Byproducts of disinfection chemicals, such as chlorine, are some of the highest detected contaminants in tap water, and they're often found at levels higher than the federal drinking water standard regulations. While chlorine is great at disinfecting, the byproducts of chlorination, chlorinated hydrocarbons, puts you at risk for a number of health risks.
However, it's not just drinking the chlorine and chlorine byproducts that are dangerous, showering or bathing in it can be just as dangerous, sometimes even more so. When taking a hot shower, you end up absorbing over 600 percent more chlorine and other chemicals, as the warm water opens up your skin's pores, making it like a sponge for chlorine.
2. Lead
Lead in tap water is mainly caused by old metal fixtures connecting the house supply to the mains. Unlike chlorine, lead dissolved in water doesn't cause any changes in color, smell or taste, so the only way to know if your water is contaminated is to have it tested. Lead is extremely toxic and particularly affects the neuromuscular system causing symptoms ranging from abdominal problems and fatigue to cognitive decline.
3. Pharmaceutical Pollution
Prescription drugs, along with medication given to livestock, are increasingly showing up in the groundwater, soil, waterways and even drinking water. Conventional sewage treatments may not be looking for drugs, and certainly, are not always removing them. In addition, prescription drugs that aren't used and are flushed down the toilet or deposited in landfills eventually end up in the environment. These pharmaceutical pollutions could have a major impact on wildlife, agriculture and humans, yet is only beginning to be studied.
4. Fluoride
Fluoride is actually a substance that many cities add to the water. We've heard most our life that it's added because we need it for good dental health. However, it's been proven that the ingestion of fluoride doesn't actually benefit us. Fluorosis, which is caused by consuming too much fluoride, is dangerous and can cause brain damage, thyroid disease, bone fractures and more.
5. Toxic Organic Compounds
Tap water can contain several organic compounds that are known to be toxic including trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, perchlorate and atrazine are just a few of them. Perchlorate is a rocket fuel additive mainly coming from military manufacturing facilities. Trichloroethylene is a degreaser that has many applications in manufacturing industries while perchloroethylene is a common solvent used in dry cleaning. These toxins can cause a lot of health risks including central nervous system damage, liver and kidney disease, stunted brain development and more.
